Wortschatz privacy policy

Wortschatz is a personal vocabulary trainer. This policy covers the Wortschatz website, the “Add to Wortschatz” browser extension, and the Wortschatz Android app.

What we store

• Account: your email address and a password hash, used only to sign you in (via Supabase Auth).
• Your vocabulary: the words you save, their translations, the sentence they were found in, and your review statistics.
• Diary entries you write on the website, and the feedback generated for them.

All of this is stored in a Supabase database and is only readable by your own account (enforced with row-level security). It is never sold, shared, or used for advertising.

What the extension does

• The extension only reads the text you actively highlight on a page (plus the sentence around it, kept as example context). It does not track your browsing, collect page history, or read pages in the background.
• Highlighted text is sent to DeepL for translation, using the DeepL API key you provide. The key is stored only in your browser's local extension storage.
• Your sign-in session is stored in the browser's local extension storage and used only to save words to your own Wortschatz account.
• On YouTube, subtitles are mirrored locally so you can select them; nothing is sent anywhere until you highlight text.

What the Android app does

• Your saved words and diary entries are stored on the device and synced to the same Supabase account described above.
• Microphone: the app records audio only while you actively use a voice feature (dictating a diary entry, or a Live conversation session you start yourself). During Live sessions, audio is streamed to OpenAI to power the spoken tutor and transcribed so you can read the conversation. Audio is never recorded in the background and is not stored by us.
• Text you write or speak for AI feedback (practice sentences, diary entries, conversation practice) is processed by the AI provider configured for the feature (OpenAI, or Anthropic) to generate corrections and examples. Mistakes found are saved to your own account so the app can build practice exercises from them.
• If you enter your own API keys in the app's settings, they are stored only on your device and used directly with the respective provider.

Your data stays yours

You can export your full vocabulary as CSV at any time — from the Words page on the website or the “Export my words” button in the extension popup — and delete individual words or your account whenever you like.
